11 August 2013 saw the fourth installment of the annual Myles Robinson Memorial Football Match between a Charterhouse XI and Newcastle University XI. Charlie Lucas captained the Charterhouse team and arranged the pitch at Charterhouse, while the Newcastle University team was captained by Charlie Lovell. With the series currently lead 2-1 by Charterhouse there was everything to play for on this sunny Sunday afternoon.
It took a while for the game to get started but Oliver Hallstrom broke the deadlock beating Charterhouse keeper Jon Jenkins with a brilliant finish after some tidy build up play from Newcastle. Almost immediately Charterhouse drew level, a scuffed shot turned goal bound by Jim Henniker. Immediately the game came to life and the reminder of the half was contested strongly, with the teams going in 1-1 at the break.
The second half started much how the first finished, both midfields passing the ball nicely and both defences keeping the sharp strikers at bay. A spectacular effort from David Wilcock powering down the right was superbly stopped by Jenkins, and Bradley Gilchrist making his debut in goal for Newcastle was making save after save denying Charlie Lucas and co.
A brilliant chip by James Walker made the score 2-1 to Charterhouse, but a diving Dave Wilcock header (who had now registered both his 1st and 2nd ever career shots on target in one half of football) brought the sides level once again.
With the game heading to a penalty shootout it was heartbreak/jubilation time, a good passing move from Charterhouse saw Charlie Lucas tuck in the winner with 1 minute to go. The final whistle blew shortly after, 3-2 to Charterhouse who now lead the series 3-1.
Both teams took to the pub shortly after to cap what was a brilliant day of football, with spectators saying it was without doubt the highest standard seen so far between the two teams. Myles would have been proud!
Many thanks to everyone from both teams who took part, see you again next year for round five.
